What Is a Saddle Stitch:
Saddle stitching is a traditional method of joining leather where the stitch holes are punched with a chisel and hammer, and a single thread with a needle on both ends is passed through each hole from both directions. This results in two continuous running stitch threads through the stitch line. If one thread is damaged, the saddle stitch will only unravel one stitch of one thread and remain tight and unaffected in the rest of the stitch. Unlike a machine lock stitch, the saddle stitch will not unravel if a stitch is broken. Not only is the saddle stitch stronger and more durable than a machine stitch, it is also easily repairable if damage does occur further extending the life of your leather product.
What Is Full Grain Leather:
Full Grain refers to the uppermost top layer of the leather hide. The strongest, thickest, and most durable leather you can buy. Full Grain leather, as opposed to Top Grain leather, has not been corrected, or sanded to remove the natural grain pattern and unique character in the leather surface. The natural top surface of the leather is more durable and resistant to the elements than the corrected surface of a Top Grain leather, and will develop a beautiful patina. Full grain leather ages and burnishes with time and use, as opposed to other corrected leathers than will wear out with time. The leather will look and feel better the more you use it.
What Is Vegetable Tanned Leather:
Vegetable Tanned refers to how the hide was preserved and made into usable leather. There are many ways to preserve a hide and Vegetable Tanning is one of the original and all-natural methods. The tannins in tree bark and plants are what help to preserve the leather and give it unique characteristics. Vegetable tanning can take weeks at a time resulting in leather that is more expensive, but higher quality than chemically treated varieties. Chemical tanning can leave the grain of the leather weakened with looser fibers resulting in leather that is not as durable and not able to develop a beautiful patina over time.
Horween Dublin:
Dublin is a full grain vegetable tanned leather infused with a rich blend of natural waxes. Horween Dublin has been tanned using Horween’s 100 year old Cordovan veg tan liquor formula. It is a "pull-up" leather where the dye is pushed around under stress, making the leather lighter in color when bent or stressed, only to have it return over time. The leather will develop a beautiful and unique patina with use and age.
Care Tips: Dublin leather requires little conditioning due to the amount of tallow infused during tanning. A high quality leather conditioner can be applied every 6-12 months to maintain the leather. Avoid soaking with water as you would with any leather item, however, water will not hurt the leather. If leather gets very wet, wipe excess moisture with a dry cloth and air dry.
